When he came to Budapest from Cluj-Napoca in 1939, after finishing his secondary school studies, he had not yet decided on a career as a composer. He enrolled in the Hungarian-French department of P\u00e9ter P\u00e1zm\u00e1ny University (where he received his doctorate in 1943) and studied composition at the Academy of Music. Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly, who retired in 1940, was Sz\u0151ll\u0151sy’s teacher for only one year, and Albert Sikl\u00f3s was his teacher from the second year. Sikl\u00f3s died the following year, however, and Sz\u0151ll\u0151sy completed his last year at the Academy of Music as a student of J\u00e1nos Viski. Immediately after the war, he was awarded a scholarship to Rome, where he attended Petrassi’s master class at the Santa Cecilia Academy in the academic year 1947\/48. <\/p>\n
Three important places had the greatest influence on his thinking and artistic beliefs, namely Cluj Napoca, the E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Collegium and Rome. His circle of friends included Rudolf Maros, Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti, G\u00e1bor Darvas and K\u00e1lm\u00e1n Hal\u00e1sz, who also sought new paths in composition. <\/p>\n
As a musicologist, he published texts and bibliographies to promote the cult of the two great masters of Hungarian music, Kod\u00e1ly and Bart\u00f3k. Sz\u0151ll\u0151sy’s greatest contribution was in the field of Bart\u00f3k philology. He created an easy-to-use catalogue of Bart\u00f3k’s works, translated into many languages, which is still used worldwide on concert programmes and CDs, with the letter “Sz”. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
