Between 1947 and 1968 he lived in Bratislava, where he was a miner, sailor, bricklayer, teacher, radio editor, director of a publishing company, Hungarian secretary of the Czechoslovak Writers&#8217; Union, editor of the Literary Review. In 1968 he emigrated to Novi Sad. In 1970 he moved to Austria, where he lived in Vienna.
