“…In addition to the press and radio broadcasts, the leaflet and the poster were the most important everyday documents of the 1956 revolution, and for many, they may be the only cherished treasures and memories of those historically powerful 12 days. Nothing demonstrates this assumption better than the fact that after the suppression of the revolution, the authorities strictly declared it a prohibited document, and the existing “official” copies were treated as sealed materials in the archives. The authorities kept a vigilant watch to ensure that later generations would not learn the true essence of October 1956 through these documents…” (Sándor Kopácsi)
Most of the texts on which the event is based are fragments of newspapers articles and literary works distributed on leaflets. Their authors are revolutionaries, intellectuals who supported the fight for freedom, exiles, people sentenced to prison or death: István Eörsi, Attila Gérecz, Lajos Ferencz, Milán Füst, Jenő Heltai, Károly Jobbágy, Mária Kalotay, Imre Máté, Géza Páskándi, Attila Puskás, Zsuzsa Szegő, Ferenc Szentkuti, Lajos Tamási, Tibor Tollas, Erzsébet Túrmezei, Mária Wittner, as well as many ’56 revolutionaries who remain anonymous. Some of the lyrics were personally offered to the composer by their emigrated authors.
