Between 1969 and 1973 he studied French at the Erzsébet Szilágyi High School in Budapest. Between 1973 and 1978 he studied Hungarian-French and Comparative Literary History at the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd University. From 1978 until his death, he was a research fellow at the Department of Modern Hungarian Literary History at the ELTE BTK, and from 1997 he was an associate professor. He was a member of the Hungarian Writers’ Association from 1988 to 2004.
